Administrative Professionals Week

Administrative Professionals Week

Previously known as Secretaries Week, this observance highlights the paramount role of administrative professionals in all areas of the modern economies across the world. Administrative Professionals Day takes place on Wednesday of Administrative Professionals Week, which takes place on the last full week in April.

How to celebrate Administrative Professionals Week

This holiday is widely observed in professional environments in the United States, as well as many other countries in the world. Most employers and supervisors plan events and gifts to demonstrate their appreciation for the efforts of their administrative professionals. The goal is to highlight the importance of such professionals to their respective organizations, and to enhance their motivation and work-related skills for the upcoming year. Busy employers who cannot afford to throw a party will often send flowers to their employees with a kind message.

It is an observance, not a holiday

Administrative Professionals Day is not a public holiday, but rather an observance. Even though Administrative Professionals are appreciated, they still have to work!

History of Administrative Professionals Day and Week

During World War II, the United States found an increased demand in skilled administrative personnel. The National Secretaries Association was founded to better serve secretaries and to acknowledge the contributions of secretaries and other administrative professionals. The Secretaries Association promoted economy growth, support of personal development and expansion in the Secretaries job market. The Association's name was changed in 1981 to Professional Secretaries International and again in 1998 to the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP).

The changes in the name were aimed to reflect the change in job responsibilities and the nature of their tasks, and also to account for the large number of varied administrative hob titles. IAAP is now a globally recognized organization that continues to provide education and training to the business community while offering its services worldwide.

The mission of the IAAP is defined on their website: http://www.iaap-hq.org/?page=About

"IAAP strives to ensure individuals working in office and administrative professions have the opportunity to connect, learn, lead, and excel."

As well as their Core Values:

Integrity:Demonstrated by honesty, accountability and ethical behavior consistent with an abiding respect for the dignity and value of individuals.

Transparency: Demonstrated through listening, understanding and responding to member and stakeholder feedback.

Excellence: Demonstrated by quality resources that support growth and development of the individual and the profession.

Collaboration: Demonstrated by an inclusive culture that appreciates the value of diverse perspectives, the power of common vision, and equality among peers.

So, on the Wednesday of the last full week in April (Wednesday, April 27, 2016), be sure to say "Happy Administrative Professionals Day!" to all administrative professionals in your life. They will surely appreciate the sentiment, and be even more ecstatic if you send a bright bouquet of fresh flowers! We recommend sending the flowers on Monday, April 25 to ensure thorough enjoyment throughout the week.
